Countdown to Copenhagen

THE SOCIAL EVENT OF THE SEASON!
Climate Action Network Canada is very proud to announce it will be hosting the Canadian premier of 'the Age of Stupid' on the 21st of September at the Royal Theatre in Toronto.

In a screening to over 40 countries, with guest Kofi Annan and starring Oscar nominee Pete Postelthwaite, Franny Armstrong's new film will be broadcast live from New York as the United National General Assembly Special Session on Climate Change meets for the last time prior to the historic Copenhagen meetings in December.

The film follows an archivist in 2055 who is searching through footage from 2007 to see where and how we went so terribly wrong in our efforts (or lack thereof) to avoid catastrophic climate change. More>

HOST YOUR OWN PREMIER...

Climate Action Network Canada would like to encourage its members to take action and host your own premier of 'the Age of Stupid' in your region (the movie will be made available shortly after the North American premier). Invite local politicians, personalities, or just your friends for an exclusive peak at what is sure to be a powerful film.

Every step of the way riders are pushing for individuals and organizations to demand that Canada be a leader in the flight against climate change. There will be riders in Manitoba this weekend and in Windsor, Ontario and Moncton, New Brunswick next week so get out and join them as they pass through your area, or to sign the KYOTOplus petition online. MISSING: CLIMATE CHANGE ON THE COUNCIL OF THE FEDERATION AGENDA
Greenpeace Action at CoFThe Council of the Federation meetings wrapped up in Regina on Friday with Premiers making various announcements on concerns shared across the country. There seemed to be a concerted effort to minimize climate change on of the agenda, but it could not be kept out of the media or off of the streets.

Protest
Climate Action Network Canada members organized events, actions, press releases and a press conference leading to various national and local news stories as well as being featured in a lengthy television piece on The National.

The Pembina Institute released a comparison of provincial climate change policies and plans during the Council of the Federation. More>

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS HARPER?
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper could be found last weekend in the company of Presidents' Obama of the USA and Caldaron of Mexico. Following very brief meetings the presidents released a lengthy statement addressing various collective concerns, which included climate change. This statement bore nothing new unfortunately, and re-stated the ambiguous, "...developed countries reducing emissions by at least 80% compared to 1990 or more recent years by 2050"(emphasis ours), as heard in the G8 in July. Prime Minister Harper will head South again on September 16th to Washington D.C. to continue a string of official visits between President Obama and his neighboring counterparts. The two leaders are expected to discuss, among other things, climate change. Climate Action Network Canada hopes to work together with colleagues across the border to ensure that nothing goes un-noticed as these two leaders meet again.

WHAT IS ON THE TABLE IN BONN III?
This week in Bonn, negotiators found themselves pouring over 200 pages of negotiating text. This was a slow moving process of elimination as countries attempted to forge ahead to reach some conclusions in Copenhagen.  There is still a standstill on defining the actual reduction targets for industrialized countries. AS expected, Canada and Japan played similar roles as Bonn I and II, blocking progress on this with only two more rounds of negotiations before conclusions must be made in Copenhagen. More>
