PEDALLING FOR THE PLANET
July 3rd marks the launch of Pedal for the Planet, a cross-country bike rally encouraging individuals and organizations to speak out and demand that Canada start acting like a leader in the fight against climate change. Separate groups will depart from St. John's, and Victoria with cyclists from across the country converging in Ottawa in mid-September. WAXMAN-MARKEY PASSES HOUSE
 
After months of debate, the House of Representatives narrowly passed the Waxmen-Markey bill that aims to introduce a national cap and trade system for carbon in the United States and cut emissions by 17% over 2005 levels by 2020. Among the legislation's 1,500-pages was an amendment permitting US federal agencies to purchase fuel derived from the tar sands. US CAN members react here.
