Justice Matters
|
Media briefings, seminars and two public fora in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto were all part of Climate Action Network's successful Climate Justice Tour from April 20-22.
With the deadline fast approaching to reach a new global climate change agreement later this year in Copenhagen, the question of what industrialized countries like Canada will be required to do to help developing countries address climate change is emerging as key to the negotiations and a new accord. During the tour, new reports from The Pembina Institute and Eco Equity/Stockholm Environment Institute were released that offer answers to the question: what is Canada's "fair share" of the global effort?
Read the reports:
Our Fair Share: Canada's Role in Supporting Global Climate Solutions
Authors Clare Demerse of Pembina and Tom Athanasiou of EcoEquity discussed their findings with media as well as 70 NGO representatives and academics. In addition, more than 250 people celebrated Earth Week at two "Climate Justice-Climate Action" events in Ottawa and Toronto.
Climate Action Network Canada gratefully acknowledges the United Church of Canada, Heinrich B?ll Foundation, and the Gordon Global Fellowship program for their support of the the tour.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES WANT STRONGER VOICE
The Indigenous Peoples' Global Summit on Climate Change concluded on April 24th with the "Anchorage Declaration". Highlights include:
- support for binding emissions reduction targets for developed countries of at least 45% below 1990 levels by 2020 and at least 95% by 2050.
- a call for greater recognition of Traditional Knowledge and more effective participation by indigenous peoples within the UNFCC process.
- rejection of climate change solutions that negatively impact indigenous peoples' rights including nuclear energy, large-scale dams, geo-engineering, "clean coal", agro-fuels, carbon trading, the Clean Development Mechanism, and forest offsets. More...>

TURNING THE CORNER: TWO YEARS AND COUNTING
|
Former federal environment minister John Baird unveiled the Conservative's "Turning the Corner" strategy on April 26, 2007, describing it as an "aggressive plan" to cut greenhouse gases and air pollution. Since then the government has repeatedly missed its own deadlines for issuing the detailed regulations required to give the strategy teeth, and Canada's total greenhouse gas emissions have continued to climb.

DEFENDING THE OIL SANDS
California is moving to implement a low carbon standard for transportation fuels and the US Congress is considering similar legislation. By contrast, the Harper government is actively lobbying to protect higher-carbon fuel derived from Canada's oil sands from American "discrimination". More...>
