Minister Prentice Goes to Washington
 
MOVING FORWARD WITH DIRTY OIL?
 
Environment Minister Jim Prentice was in Washington last week to discuss climate and energy issues with his American counterparts, while demonstrators were protesting against coal-fired plants in the US.  Prentice is trying to convince the public that the Harper government and President Obama are on the same page on climate change, but privately, a Canadian official acknowledged that "we are getting killed on oil sands." Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal argues that Canada will have to get serious about the role of the tar sands in its energy and climate policies in order to keep up with President Obama's more tough stance on the environment. More>

The Air Resources Board released a proposed regulation that would implement Governor Schwarzenegger's Low Carbon Fuel Standard, a policy to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from California's transportation fuels by 10% by 2020 and more thereafter. More>

 A study released in the journal Science, found that severe drought in 2005 restricted the Amazon rainforest's ability to sequester carbon dioxide and killed off so many trees as to make areas net carbon  emitters. More>
