Where’s the Plan?
Two years and counting: when will the Harper government really “Turn the Corner” on climate change and smog?
(Ottawa) Two years ago this Sunday, the federal government trumpeted its intention to regulate greenhouse gases (GHG) and air quality in its “Turning the Corner” plan. Twenty-four months have passed yet Canadians are still waiting for real action. In the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency is moving to regulate emissions. The Australian government is planning to implement a cap-and-trade system just two-and-a-half years after taking office. The health of hundreds of thousands of Canadians continues to suffer due to smog, and the December deadline for a new global climate change agreement is fast approaching.
As Environment Minister Jim Prentice heads to Washington for a meeting of major GHG-emitting countries, some of Canada’s leading environmental and health groups are asking when the Harper government will stop dithering and produce a real plan.
